Come annunciato dagli organizzatori della Euro Racecar Series, in occasione della prima gara su ovale di una serie NASCAR in Europa, che si terrà a Tours nel weekend del 6-8 luglio, oltre al tri-campione del WTCC Yvan Muller scenderà in pista anche un ospite americano.
Si tratta di Ben Kennedy, 20enne di Daytona Beach, Florida, che l’anno scorso ha affrontato la sua prima stagione completa nella K&N Pro Series East, al volante della Chevrolet #96 del Ben Kennedy Racing, raggiungendo il 13esimo posto nella classifica genera e conquistando come miglior risultato un terzo posto in occasione del debutto della serie al Bowman Gray Stadium, in North Carolina.
La stagione 2012 è iniziata per lui con una serie di top-10, cinque in sette gare, rovinata solo da un incidente all’Iowa Speedway e da un problema alla pompa del carburante, patito sabato al Langley Speedway. Al momento occupa la settima posizione in classifica generale, a 41 punti dal leader Chase Elliott.
Ben fa parte del programma di sviluppo dell’Hendrick Motorsports ed è anche bisnipote del fondatore della NASCAR, Bill France. Viene da un famiglia che da sempre è legata strettamente alle corse, visto che è il figlio dell’Executive Vice President della NASCAR, Lesa Kennedy.

Cosa pensi di questa opportunità di correre su ovale in Europa? Cosa ti aspetti da questa gara?
“Questa occasione di correre in Europa è assolutamente fantastica. Tutto l’impegno che è stato profuso per rendere possibile questo progetto è grandioso e non posso ringraziare abbastanza tutte le persone coinvolte per aver lavorato così duramente per darmi l’opportunità di correre a Tours. Penso anche che sarà una bellissima gara. Mi sono documentato molto su questa serie e sarà una bella sfida per me.”
Come sei arrivato a questo accordo?
“L’accordo si è concretizzato l’anno scorso, cosa che dimostra quanto a lungo abbiamo lavorato per arrivare a questa gara. Mi è stata offerta la possibilità e l’ho accettata senza pensarci due volte.”
Hai già visto la pista di Tours? Cosa ne pensi?
“Non ho ancora visto la pista dal vero, ma comunque ho visto i disegni di come sarà. Sebra un bel circuito, simile ad uno su cui corriamo nella NASCAR K&N Pro Series East, il Bowman Gray Stadium, dove si disputa una delle gare più emozionanti dell’anno.”
Sei cresciuto in una famiglia con forti radici nel mondo delle corse. Come hai deciso di diventare un pilota NASCAR? Come è stata la tua prima gara?
“Per tutta la vita sono sempre stato a contatto con questo sport e ho avuto l’opportunità di guidare un go-kart per la prima volta a 13 anni, grazie ad un amico di famiglia, anche lui appassionato di corse di lunga data. Dopo la prima esperienza ho voluto proseguire, quindi abbiamo comprato una Quarter Midget (una vettura con motore ) e da lì è cominciata la mia carriera”
Quali pensi che siano gli aspetti più interessanti delle gare per stock car?
“Ci sono un sacco di aspetti interessanti in queste gare e soprattutto in quelle della NASCAR. Per prima cosa, c’è una grandissima competitività e si corre contro piloti che hanno dei curricula impressionanti. Il talento che occorre per essere nella top-5 o anche solo nella top-10 è incredibile e non potrà che diventare più difficile mano a mano che saliremo di categoria.”
Come è andata la tua prima stagione nella K&N Pro Series?
“E’ stata positiva. Abbiamo avuto un po’ di alti e bassi nel corso dell’anno ma comunque mi ha dato il massimo dell’esperienza al volante che potessi desiderare. Per il resto di questa stagione siamo fiduciosi e inseguiamo il titolo.“
Quest’anno stai andando molto forte in una serie ultra-competitiva. Cosa pensi di dover ancora migliorare per arrivare in Victory Lane?
“Dobbiamo migliorare ancora un po’. C’è sempre di che migliorare non solo come capacità di guida, ma anche come vettura, crescendo insieme come team. Questo che è fantastico della NASCAR, è che è uno sport di squadra e non saremmo dove siamo, senza la nostra squadra, gli sponsor e soprattutto i fan.”
Cosa fai quando non corri? Come concili il fatto di essere uno studente e un pilota?
“Frequento la University of Florida a Gainsville e questo può rappresentare un bel problema, specialmente quando siamo così spesso in trasferta. Per fortuna molti dei miei insegnanti mi assecondano e mi aiutano a sistemare eventuali problemi di calendario. Mi piace anche praticare il wakeboard, così come ogni altro sport acquatico quando sono a casa.”
Qual è la tua pista preferita?
“Posso dire che ne ho parecchie. Bowman Gray è una delle mie preferite visto che è lì che ho ottenuto il mio miglior risultato nella K&N East l’anno scorso (terzo posto alle spalle di Matt DiBenedetto e Corey LaJoie, ndr). Anche il New Smyrna Speedway è tra i miei preferiti, perché è la mia pista di casa.”
Quali sono i tuoi programmi per il futuro?
“Voglio migliorare e puntare al campionato quest’anno, conquistando una o due vittorie. Per il prossimo anno è ancora tutto da definire al momento.”
Vuoi dire qualcosa ai fan europei della NASCAR?
“Sì, vorrei ringraziarvi per l’opportunità di correre da voi e spero che veniate tutti a tifare per il team #96!”

What do you think about this opportunity to race on an oval track in Europe? What do you expect from this race?
“This opportunity to race in Europe is absolutely amazing. All of the effort that has been put behind this project is very great and I cant thank everyone enough for working so hard to give me an opportunity to race in Tours. I think it will be a great race too I have heard and researched a lot about this series and it will be a great challenge to me.”
How did this deal come through?
“This deal actually came through last year, which really shows how long we have been working on the process to make it to this race. I was presented with this opportunity and without much thought accepted the challenge.”
Have you already seen the Tours track? What do you think about it?
“I have not actually seen the race track, however, I have seen drawings of what the track seems to be like. It looks like an awesome track, actually similar to a track we race in the NASCAR K&N East series at Bowman Gray Stadium, which is one of the most suspenseful races of our year.”
You grew up in a family with strong racing roots. How did you decide to be a NASCAR driver? How was your first race?
“I’ve always been around the sport throughout my life and I was presented the opportunity to drive a go-kart for the first time at age 13 by a good family friend who has been in racing for a long time too. After my first experience behind the wheel I had to get more of it and So we pursued buying a quarter midget go-kart and thus began my racing career.”
What do you think are the most interesting aspects of stock car racing?
“There are a ton of aspects that go into racing and especially racing in a NASCAR series. First off, the competition is super competitive especially when racing against drivers with pretty impressive driving resumes. The amount of talent to run in the top 5 or even top 10 is incredible and will only get tougher as we progress up the ranks.”
How was your rookie season in the K&N Pro Series?
“It was good. We had a few ups and downs in the year, however, it was probably the most amount of experience I could ever ask for behind the wheel of a car. We’re looking forward to the rest of this year and pursuing a championship in the series.”
This year you’ve been pretty strong in a ultra-competitive series. What do you think you still have to improve to reach victory lane?
“We have a bit to improve. There is always ways to improve not only your driving ability, but also your racing equipment too, while also growing together as a team. That is what is great about NASCAR is that it is a team sport and we wouldn’t be here without our crew, sponsors, and especially our fans!”
What do you do when you’re not racing? How do you concile being a student and a racecar driver?
“Of course I am attending the University of Florida in Gainesville, FL and that can be a major challenge especially when on the road so much. Thankfully many of my teachers work with my schedule and help me coordinate any issues. I also enjoy to wakeboard and any sort of water sports at home.”
What’s your favorite track?
“I have a lot of favorite tracks I guess you could say. Bowman Gray is probably one of my favorite ones seeing that that is where I got my best NASCAR K&N East finish last year. New Smyrna Speedway has also been one of my favorite tracks as it is my home track.”
What are you programs for your future?
“To progress and run for a championship this season and get a win or two under our belt. As for next year its all up in the air as of now.”
Is there something you would like to say to the european nascar fans?
“Yes, I would like to say thank you for letting us come and race in your country and I hope you all come out and cheer for the #96 team!”
